About Karate

Karate was developed on the Japanese island of Okinawa from the tenth century from influences of Chinese boxing and Japanese Kendo and Jujitsu.

Gichin Funakoshi introduced Karate to Japan in 1922 and by 1964 almost every country in the world had a Japanese instructor from the “Shotokan” (the name of his hall where Funakoshi taught).

Learning Karate will help develop a strong, positive character, teach courtesy and respect and develop a strong mind as well as a fit and strong body.

A student will learn various striking techniques such as punching and kicking, but the main development is in the use of blocks and counter attacks to stop an opponent from hitting you. Karate is only for self-defence.

“The ultimate aim of the art of karate lies not in victory or defeat but in the perfection of character of its participants.”

Gichen Funakoshi (1868 – 1957)
